Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday, March 5th at 12.05 pm and 7 pm

Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence. From the Middle Ages,  it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross. The reminder that we are dust turns our attention to the creative power of God, and God’s ability to heal the brokenness in our lives when we offer it to God. This turning to God is the work of Lent,  and a way to prepare for the celebration of Easter.

Come to one of the services at our Cathedral on this day - there will be imposition of ashes at both the sung Eucharist at 12.05 pm and the choral Eucharist at 7 pm.

River through the Desert - A Lenten Study

River through the Desert - A Lenten Study

Sundays, March 16th, 23rd, 30th, April 6th, 13th at Noon

In these turbulent times when everything seems to be turned upside down, a pilgrimage is a great way to settle our hearts, minds, and souls. Travel to the Land of the Holy One my not be possible at the moment, but the Reverend Canon Richard Sewell, Dean of St. George’s College Jerusalem, has developed a Lenten resource to take us on a pilgrimage with Jesus.

Bring your coffee and lunch to the Wicksteed Room (in the Undercroft) after the 10.30 am service and join Canon Doug and Edward, who are facilitating this pilgrimage during Lent.

March Issue

March Issue

Available now!

Check out news and stories from across the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa and beyond!

The front-page story takes readers far beyond our diocese indeed, offering views all the way from the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. Archbishop Hosam Naoum and the Very Rev. Richard Sewell, dean of St. George’s College, joined Bishop Shane Parker for a webinar discussion about the impacts of the Israel-Gaza war, particularly on St. George’s College which is struggling as the Anglican centre for pilgrimage while pilgrims have stopped coming.

As you prepare for Lent, you can read about River Through the Desert, an online program of readings, reflections and videos developed by St. George’s College intended to offer “a taste of the beauty, wonder and inspiration of the Holy Land.

Closer to home, this issue also includes inspiring stories of the ways Anglican parishes in the diocese are reaching out to their communities in innovative ways — welcoming music lovers to jazz vesper services and warmly welcoming newcomers to Canada. There is also information about the Future Fund, intended to support and fuel such innovations, and its first application deadline on March 15, 2025.

Community of the Cross of Nails

Community of the Cross of Nails

Newsletter

The Community of the Cross of Nails (CCN) is a Christian network of over 260 churches, schools, chaplaincies and retreat centres who, drawn together by the story of Coventry Cathedral, share a common commitment to work and pray for peace, justice and reconciliation through: healing the wounds of history; learning to live with difference and celebrate diversity; building a culture of justice and peace. As a network of ordinary people, we work to seek peace and pursue it in our relationships.

Christ Church Cathedral became a partner and was presented with a Cross of Nails in 2017 for our work in reconciliation with indigenous peoples. It may be found on the pillar in the Chapel of Reconciliation. In September every year, one Sunday is set aside for all worship communities involved with the CCN to pray together, to reconnect our communities with why the CCN matters, why Coventry still inspires, and where our own stories connect.
