Easter Day

Easter Day

Sunday, April 20th, 2025

On Easter Day there will be a quiet, said Holy Eucharist (BCP) at 8:30 am, and Festal Eucharist (BAS). The Reverend Canon Doug Richards will celebrate, and The Reverend Bob Albert will preach.

There will be a Festal Eucharist (BAS) at 10:30 am. The Very Reverend Beth Bretzlaff will celebrate, and The Right Reverend Dr. Shane Parker will preach.

The music of the Queen of Festivals demands and inspires freshness and vitality. Here at CCC Ottawa our choirs and organists with trumpets and percussion will offer an explosion of sound from contemporary and late twentieth century sources. From the organ Jean Langlais’s “Incantation pour Un Jour Saint”, Charles Tournemire’s “Improvisation sur Victimae Paschali”, C-M Widor’s “Toccata”. From our Combined Choirs Michael McCarthy’s (late of Washington National Cathedral) “Vidi Aquam”, Gerre Hancock’s (late of St Thomas Fifth Avenue NYC) Easter Introit and Missa Ressurectionis and Ottawa-native Paul Halley’s setting of “Christ whose glory fills the skies”.  Not least, the singing of the entire community in hymns and descants of splendour and celebration!

Readings: Isaiah 65:17-25; Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23; Acts 10:34-43; Luke 24:1-12.

The 10.30 am service may be livestreamed, please check our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@ChristChurchCathedralOttawa). Some technical issues are being experienced so there is no guarantee. Thank you for your patience!

The Cathedral will be open for quiet prayer and mediation and the labyrinth will be available for prayerful walking on this holy day

Musical Meditation for Good Friday

Musical Meditation for Good Friday

3 pm

It is something of a minor tradition at the Cathedral for a setting of the Stabat Mater to be sung on the afternoon of Good Friday – a devotional and solemn musical offering in the shadow of the Cross. This year, Andrew McAnerney will direct our Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars accompanied by Cathedral Organist James Calkin in Josef Rheinberger’s “Stabat Mater” Opus 138. Rheinberger (1839-1901) spent his career in Munich both at the royal court and the conservatory where he was a revered pedagogue. Restrained and elegant, this “Stabat Mater” (one of two he composed) was written in 1884 – a thank-offering for a recovery in his health.

This photo was taken during a season of my life marked by reconnection and renewal – a grace-filled moment captured while attending a digital photography course at Sorrento Centre in British Columbia. I had been to Sorrento many times before...

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes

During Holy Week

There are many, many hands that help to get ready to celebrate Easter! The Lackey Room is filled with flowers to be arranged and items to be packaged for delivery by the pastoral care team. Liturgies are finalized and much editing and photocopying is being done. Windows have been washed and pews tidied. Sermons are still being written and music rehearsed. What a happening, lively and happy place! Thanks to all who work behind the scenes so that all who attend can enjoy the beauty of worshipping the Risen Christ!
