River through the Desert - A Lenten Study

River through the Desert - A Lenten Study

Sunday, April 13th at Noon

In these turbulent times when everything seems to be turned upside down, a pilgrimage is a great way to settle our hearts, minds, and souls. Travel to the Land of the Holy One my not be possible at the moment, but the Reverend Canon Richard Sewell, Dean of St. George’s College Jerusalem, has developed a Lenten resource to take us on a pilgrimage with Jesus.

Bring your coffee and lunch to the Wicksteed Room (in the Undercroft) after the 10.30 am service and join Canon Doug and Edward. This will be the last session.

Contemplative Prayer

Thursday, April 17th at 12.05 pm

Come to the Chancel for a time of prayer, reflection, and silence to calm your soul and open your heart to God's presence.

Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday

Choral Eucharist with Stripping of the Altar at 7 pm

The Right Reverend Dr. Shane Parker will celebrate, and The Reverend Bob Albert will preach on this night that captures both the self-sacrificial love of the Last Supper as well as the shocking betrayal and abandonment that followed. Sung by the Cathedral Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars, it is one of the few opportunities anywhere in this country to hear Arvo Part’s “Beatitudes” in this devastatingly affective context.

Readings: Exodus 12:1-4, 11-14; Psalm 116:1, 10-17; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:1-17, 31b-35.

Good Friday

Good Friday

Solemnity of the Lord's Passion at noon

At the heart of this ascetic service at noon are the Reproaches. Sung by our Boy Choristers with Lay Clerks will be John Sanders’s bracing and arresting setting. The Reverend Canon Doug Richards will officiate, and The Very Reverend Beth Bretzlaff will preach.

Readings: Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Psalm 22:1-23; Hebrews 10:16-25; John 18:1-19:42.

Spend Time in the Sacred Space

Spend Time in the Sacred Space

On Good Friday from 1 to 3 pm

The Cathedral will be open for quiet prayer and mediation on this holy day.

Musical Meditation for Good Friday

Musical Meditation for Good Friday

At 3 pm

It is something of a minor tradition at the Cathedral for a setting of the Stabat Mater to be sung on the afternoon of Good Friday – a devotional and solemn musical offering in the shadow of the Cross. This year, Andrew McAnerney will direct our Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars accompanied by Cathedral Organist James Calkin in Josef Rheinberger’s “Stabat Mater” Opus 138. Rheinberger (1839-1901) spent his career in Munich both at the royal court and the conservatory where he was a revered pedagogue. Restrained and elegant, this “Stabat Mater” (one of two he composed) was written in 1884 – a thank-offering for a recovery in his health.

A Vigil for Easter

A Vigil for Easter

Holy Saturday at 8 pm

On this night, we gather in darkness and kindle the Easter fire, hear the foundational scriptures of our faith, and celebrate that all things are made new in the Risen Christ. The Very Reverend Beth Bretzlaff will officiate.

Readings: Exodus 14:1-15:1; Isaiah 55:1-11; Ezekiel 36:24-28; Romans 6:3-11; Mark 16:1-8

Easter Day

Easter Day

Alleluia!

On Easter Day there will be a quiet, said Holy Eucharist (BCP) at 8:30 am, and Festal Eucharist (BAS). The Reverend Canon Doug Richards will celebrate, and The Reverend Bob Albert will preach.

There will be a Festal Eucharist (BAS) at 10:30 am. The Very Reverend Beth Bretzlaff will celebrate, and The Right Reverend Dr. Shane Parker will preach.

The music of the Queen of Festivals demands and inspires freshness and vitality. Here at CCC Ottawa our choirs and organists with trumpets and percussion will offer an explosion of sound from contemporary and late twentieth century sources. From the organ Jean Langlais’s “Incantation pour Un Jour Saint”, Charles Tournemire’s “Improvisation sur Victimae Paschali”, C-M Widor’s “Toccata”. From our Combined Choirs Michael McCarthy’s (late of Washington National Cathedral) “Vidi Aquam”, Gerre Hancock’s (late of St Thomas Fifth Avenue NYC) Easter Introit and Missa Ressurectionis and Ottawa-native Paul Halley’s setting of “Christ whose glory fills the skies”.  Not least, the singing of the entire community in hymns and descants of splendour and celebration!

Readings: Isaiah 65:17-25; Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24; Acts 10:34-43; Luke 24:1-12.

Together, We Can Reach Our Goal

Together, We Can Reach Our Goal

The Canadian Campaign for St. George's College Jerusalem

As we reach the end of our campaign for St. George’s College Jerusalem after Palm Sunday, the need for support remains. The situation in the region is unpredictable, and the college continues to face challenges. Your contribution helps ensure that the college can retain staff with reduced salaries and that the facilities are maintained during this difficult time. This will allow the college to be ready to welcome pilgrims again as soon as it’s safe.

If you're able, it’s not too late to give a little more. Every bit helps us move closer to our goal and ensures that the small yet strong Christian community in the Diocese of Jerusalem receives the support it needs to continue its vital work in education, spiritual renewal, pilgrimage and reconciliation.

Once again, thank you so much for your generosity.

With warm thanks and best wishes,
The Right Reverend Shane Parker

Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa
Chair of the Canadian Campaign for St. George's College Jerusalem
