Othman Family UpdateFrom 2015 to now In the fall of 2015, a co-sponsorship was developed between Christ Church Cathedral and the Rotary Club of Ottawa and members of the group worked hard over the next couple of months to prepare to welcome a Syrian refugee family. With great excitement , on the morning of February 18th, 2016, some of the sponsors gathered at the airport to meet the Othman family - Mohamad and Shoq and their four children - two boys, Atia(7) and Amro (6) and two girls, Hala(5) and Jana (2). It did not take long for this family to adapt to life in Canada and they worked hard to make the best of all opportunities available to them . Their English improved rapidly and they soon found various means of employment. Mohamad has started his own company, Beaver Decks, and Shoq works in a daycare preparing lunches for the children. They have all become Canadian citizens and in March 2023, they welcomed a Canadian born daughter, Mariam. Recently a few members of the original sponsorship group, who have stayed in touch with the family and become friends, visited them to congratulate them on being in Canada for 10 years. They were treated to a magnificent Syrian feast, prepared by Shoq with help from Hala and Jana. It was a very happy afternoon, reminiscing about times spent together over the past ten years. Congratulations to Mohamad and Shoq and family. We are so proud of you! |

An Invitation to Share in HopeAt Christ Church Cathedral It is easy to be moved by the sacred beauty and warm welcome of Christ Church Cathedral — a place some encounter briefly, and others come to call their spiritual home. It is a place that nourishes the soul through worship and music, care and community, and it exists because of generosity: the generosity of those who have gone before us, and the generosity of those who give today. To share hope faithfully and sustainably, our Cathedral must be well resourced. As an expression of joy and gratitude, you are invited to consider how you might respond. Click below to explore an invitation to give, to see what your giving makes possible, and to learn how it is easy to give. You may also wish to hear Dean Beth’s sermon from December 14th, which reflects on Giving with Joy. The livestream is available here. Thank you for responding to this place that sustains you by offering your own gifts in return.
