Cathedral Newsletter for February 13th, 2022

This week we will celebrate the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany with a Sung Eucharist (BAS) live-streamed at 10:30 am. Our preacher will be Canon Doug Richards.

Sadly, due to the ongoing situation in downtown Ottawa, we will not be reopening for in-person worship this Sunday as planned. We hope to be able to do so next week. Please stay tuned.

Opening for In-Person Worship Postponed

Opening for In-Person Worship Postponed

To Sunday, February 20th

Although things in the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral have calmed considerably this week, when it comes to opening for services the first priority remains safety, and the second is accessibility.

Unfortunately, the situation is still pretty fluid with some 500 vehicles parked downtown, making parking a real issue for those wanting to attend services. Also, the protestors that remain are determined and volatile, which is not a good mix. As police step up their efforts to move people on, there is also the possibility of another convoy arriving over the weekend. Therefore, erring on the side of caution and safety, we will wait one more week to open. Thank you for your understanding, support and prayers for all during this very difficult time.

Hopefully, on the 20th we will celebrate the 7th Sunday after the Epiphany with three in-person services: Holy Eucharist (BCP) at 8:30 am; Choral Eucharist (BAS) at 10:30 am; and a Festal Evensong at 4 pm celebrating the 70th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. For those not able to join us in-person, the 10:30 service will be livestreamed and available on our Youtube channel.

The Wednesday noon Eucharist using a liturgy from Iona will also hopefully resume in person on February 23rd. This service will be held in the Chancel, so please use the ramp on the east side if you require accessibility.

Please note the proof of vaccination accompanied by provincial ID is required for attendance at all services; pre-registration is not required. Masks must be worn at all times except when receiving communion, and congregational singing is not currently allowed.

The current downtown occupation, coming hard on the heels of the COVID lockdown, has been particularly stressful and hard on everyone's emotional and spiritual health. Please do reach out to Canon Doug Richards (doug.richards@ottawacathedral.ca) or Dean Beth Bretzlaff (beth.bretzlaff@ottawacathedral.ca) if you need support, prayers or simply a listening ear. Take good care, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Signs of Hope in the Fight Against Climate Change

Signs of Hope in the Fight Against Climate Change

Monday, February 21st at 7.30 pm online

As experts gathered in Glasgow for the UN Climate Change Conference in late 2021, their message to the world was that there is an urgent need for humanity to change the way we live on the Earth and to find creative solutions to lower carbon emissions globally. We need to act as individuals, communities, and nations.

In this third installment of an online lecture series to commemorate the 125th anniversary of our Diocese, a panel of climate change experts will help educate us and inspire action as we look forward to the future with hope. Please join in!

St. Luke's Connection

Last summer, as churches reopened, I wrote to express heartfelt thanks for the Cathedral-St. Luke’s connection through dark pandemic days. Once again, in December, we found ourselves faced with the suspension of in-person worship, and what a blessing it was to return to partnering for Sunday morning livestreaming through the month of January. I am so grateful for this connection.

This past Sunday, St. Luke’s opened its doors for in-person worship again. You were all in our hearts, and in our prayers as the Cathedral delayed reopening in the midst of the occupation in the downtown core. Those prayers continue as you navigate these next days and weeks.Once again, I extend heartfelt thanks from me, and on behalf of St. Luke’s, to the Cathedral for the last month. Thank you for this meaningful and lifegiving connection. I look forward, with hope, to the ways that we might maintain and deepen that connection.

Diocesan launch

On Wednesday evening, February 2nd, our Anglican Diocese of Ottawa gathered online to launch this compelling initiative. For those not able to participate at the time, or for those who would like to revisit the event, the link is included below.

Over the next six weeks, our Cathedral's SPMC Team will be working through a toolkit to think about our parish profile, opportunities and challenges, look at where we are headed, and think about parish ministry in our diocese as a whole. If you have any questions, please be in touch with Dean Beth.
