Celebrating Holy Week and Easter from HomeA message from our Director of Music Dear Friends, I hope this finds you well and enjoying what has been a lovely spell of warm spring weather! As some of you may know, last Thursday Bishop Parker announced his decision not to move the Diocese into the AMBER stage of re-opening; we will remain with the now familiar RED stage restrictions for the time being including for Holy Week and Easter. Sadly, this will be a second Holy Week and Easter in a row observed and celebrated without the full complement of our choral ministry. Everyone - the Dean, assisting clergy, Andrew, and I - all of us grieve deeply this musical drought and the continued absence of our Choirs from this place. As the vaccination campaign in this country gains momentum we ought to see an improvement in the public health metrics such that restrictions can gradually be loosened and lifted especially as concerns liturgy and music. That moment is not now - though, God willing, it approaches and we will be ready for it. Now, however, is the moment to continue to (as Bishop Parker writes) "...rely on our expertise, creativity, collaboration, and strong faith to mark this holiest time in the Christian calendar with intention, conviction, and hope..." . The Cathedral will offer sung services for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Day led by a variety of cantor teams from all three Choirs. Additionally, on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week we will offer a sung midday eucharist. This, it's worth remembering, is a big improvement on what we were confined to this time last year. Additionally, on the afternoon of Good Friday the Girls' Choir will release a (COVID-compliant) sacred concert video of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" - the first time since 2019 that that work has been heard here. Then, in the weeks after Easter, we will be producing and releasing a series of four video recitals featuring Cathedral and community artists performing in the splendour of our Cathedral's sanctuary - stay tuned for a poster announcement on that shortly. I hope you will follow the services over the coming week or so via our YouTube channel. The seismic narrative arc that takes us from Palm/Passion Sunday through the Triduum to Easter morning has inspired some of the most profound and gripping musical expression - as you well know! It is best and most richly experienced in its totality. We have intentionally located familiar choral works and hymn descants throughout the week; think "Greater Love", "Set me as a seal", "Ubi caritas", "This Joyful Eastertide". Since they can only be sung in person by two (2) cantors, I'm relying on you to fill in the gaps as I know only you are able:) Thank you, as always, for your continued engagement with our Music Ministry and for the patient and positive attitude you have shown throughout this challenging year. James Calkin Please continue to pray and give thanks for our music ministry, all choristers, organists and Directors of Music, during these pandemic days. |

Pilgrimage to CoventryJoin the Dean in this online experience As a partner in the Community of the Cross of Nails, cathedral members are encouraged to visit Coventry and share in its very special and powerful message of reconciliation. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, a pilgrimage is hosted specifically for this purpose. It is an occasion for partners, current and aspiring, to come together at Coventry Cathedral for prayer and contemplation, to meet others in the network, to share their stories and experiences, and to learn from and be involved in the work of the Cathedral’s global reconciliation ministry. This year, due to Covid-19, they held their first, and very successful, online pilgrimage! You can read about it here. And now there will be an online spring pilgrimage on April 28th-30th, from 2pm to 6pm UK time. Our dean has been to Coventry and will be attending and she would love to have company! Please register by emailing alice.farnhill@coventrycathedral.org.uk and also contact the cathedral office by email at info@ottawacathedral.ca or by phone at 613.236.9149 to let us know if you will be attending. We look forward to having a cathedral group share this once in a lifetime experience! For more infomation visit:

Help Cathedral groups' doves take flight!
The Cathedral Girls' Choir and Sunday School are making 100 origami doves to contribute to the Diocese's The Thousand Doves Project! This special initiative supports the Diocese's refugee ministry; a ministry which brings together the unique capacities of the Diocese's Refugee Ministry Office with committed refugee sponsorship groups in our Anglican parishes to help over a hundred refugees annually rebuild their lives in the Ottawa region. When combined with the doves made by others in our Diocese, our Girls' Choir and Sunday School efforts will result in a hope-inspiring display for all to enjoy, as the flock is collected and installed above the nave of Cathedral for the “reveal” on Pentecost Sunday, May 23. CLICK HERE to sponsor the Girls' Choir and Sunday School's doves. Remember to indicate "Cathedral groups" at the bottom of the donation form. Thank you for your support for this life-giving ministry! And thanks to our talented dove-makers! |

Offerings from St. Luke's
On Wednesdays, St. Luke's offers a Service of the Word with Lectio divina on Zoom. Three different translations (NRSV, Good News and The Message) of the Gospel for the coming Sunday are read, and we are guided by the questions "What word or phrase stood out for you?" "What spoke to you in the passage?" "What meaning had you not perceived before?" and "What is the Gospel asking you to do today?". All are welcome. Click here for the Zoom link.
St. Luke's offers a weekly newsletter with worship resources and much more. CLICK HERE to subscribe, or here to look at previous editions.
