Cathedral Newsletter for August 29th, 2021

This Sunday we celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Please join us for in-person worship! Holy Eucharist (BCP) begins at 8:30 am, and Sung Eucharist (BAS) at 10:30 am. Our preacher will be Canon Hilary Murray.

We especially welcome St. Luke's, Ottawa, who are worshipping with us this Sunday.

For those of you who are not joining us in-person this weekend, please CLICK HERE to join the live-stream Sunday at 10:30. We hope you will share this service with others in appropriate ways, abiding physical distancing.

Congregational singing returns - behind your masks

We are so pleased to be open for in-person worship, and to be able to sing and receive communion in both kinds! As numbers are still limited, please register for Sunday services and the Wednesday noon service, by clicking on the link below. If you know someone who is not able to register online, please ask them to call the office (613-236-9149) or send an email (info@ottawacathedral.ca).

Physical distancing is required and masks must be worn at all times in the building, even when singing (except when receiving communion). Please enter for services via the Sparks Street glass doors, so that we may check you in and show you to a pew. Washrooms are available on both the lower level and by the Great Hall kitchen.

When it comes time for Communion we are pleased to be able to offer the common cup again. Proceed in a single line to the chancel. Each group seated together then moves to the altar rail on the same side of the Cathedral that you are seated - one group or individual to each side of the centre - and you may stand or kneel. For a blessing, cross your hands over your chest; for gluten-free, hold out one hand; for a regular wafer, hold out two hands. The common cup has been deemed safe, but if you are uncomfortable taking the cup, receiving in one kind is full communion. Intinction (dipping the wafer in the wine) is strictly prohibited. Please remove your mask, receive communion, and replace your mask before returning to your seat via one of the side aisles.

Please read this letter from Bishop Shane for information on the move to Yellow protocols and on how the decision to allow communion in both kinds was reached. (The move was based on “The Common Cup and SARS-CoV-2 Infection Risk” a paper by the diocese’s Public Health Advisor, Rev. Michael Garner. You can read it here).

Travelling to the Cathedral

Travelling to the Cathedral

Seniors can now ride all OC Transpo services for free on Sundays and Wednesdays

With the excitement of Phase II of the Cathedral Hill Development comes the challenge for us to be more eco-friendly! If possible, take the O-Train (the Lyon Station is just down the street) or the bus (https://www.octranspo.com/en/our-services/bus-o-train-network/), bike, scoot or walk.

If you are driving, free parking is available on the streets around the Cathedral on Sundays, as well as at the National Archives (395 Wellington Street), a very short walk away. There are also numerous hotel and city lots in the vicinity.

Girls' choir tuning up

This week we were so pleased to have the Girls' Choir back on site as they participated in their summer choir camp. Voices were raised again (abiding all protocols) for the first time in a long time as they prepare for the fall term. Watch this space for more information of renewal of the music program.

Ride for Refuge is gearing up for 2021!

Ride for Refuge is gearing up for 2021!

Join the Cathedral team this summer

We are excited to tell you that Christ Church Cathedral will again be participating in the Ride for Refuge in support of PWRDF. The Cathedral team is "getting ready", oiling the chains on their bikes, stretching out unused muscles, tuning up their instruments and sharpening knitting needles. Yes, once again the options of how you can participate are as varied as your talents.

This year's team has set an initial goal to raise $2,500 and with your support will achieve success again this year. Funds in 2021 will benefit the “Light for Every Birth” project, which provides solar suitcases to health clinics in Mozambique, allowing for safer births at night, in areas without power. A matching grant doubles the efforts. Click here to learn more about this project.

Interested in joining this year's team or sponsoring their efforts? We invite you to direct questions or comments to info@ottawacathedral.ca
